THE WALK OF LIFE
We are born unsullied and pure.
In our first 7 years our neural pathways are set, for us.
We push and test boundaries, and everywhere we encounter borders.
The builders, plasterers, and sculptors get to work – we become who we are moulded to become.
At 16 we know that we know everything, and that we are strong and invincible.
We now take full control over the plastering of our persona, we feed it data from social media and peer groups.
In our late teens and early 20’s we realise that we know nothing, and that we are fragile and vulnerable.
The phase of bravado ensues – we have to keep this fact, and the embarrassment of our behaviour in our teen years hidden.
Mid to late 20’s, and even moving into our 30’s and 40’s, we are worried and scared. How did I get here? Where am I going?
Now what? Continue to keep this knowledge and fear hidden inside, keep going with the same routines and along the same path and hope things will change? Or, seek help (good idea).
No, you do not need a shrink or therapy, there is nothing wrong with you. You have simply been walking, trudging, and stumbling along the walk of life.
This is not a bad or sad song, the life that you have led – have a listen and watch the video, smile when you recognise yourself, have fun with some of your memories (Dire Straits – The Walk of Life)
The years go by and, if we do nothing, we drift along the unfolding of our lives never quite feeling comfortable or at peace, we know that something is wrong (cognitive dissonance).
To try and rectify this uneasy feeling we plan more, control more, strive more, or sadly, and unnecessarily, we give up.
If this unease is very strong we might start to think that we have hid a quarter or mid-life crisis.
No, this is not a crisis! It is the opposite, it is a revelation, an epiphany, a breakthrough. The person that you are now, the person that you have become, is not the real you.
Now the process of unearthing the real you, and finding your true purpose, can begin. The return to Innocence. Chipping away at all the plaster that has become layered onto you and revealing the true masterpiece and gem that has always been there, the unsullied and pure you.
We approach retirement age and our thoughts turn to reviewing the life that we have led. What did we do with our time? What have we done with our lives?
Wisdom now leads, and repressing the regrets, what if’s, and if only’s, many of us then turn to an altruistic giving back to people and the planet, as far as we are able. The unease goes away and we are at peace.
Would it not be wonderful to arrive at this peaceful state far earlier in life?
